I saw the trailer this morning when I woke up, and had to fire off a quick Tweet to ya'll.
This movie is intriguing to me.
For one, I am an amateur linguist. My Dad taught me basic Russian and how to read and write Cyrillic when I was 5 and 6 years old. I taught myself how to read and write Japanese Kana when I was 14, and conjugation. My latest language foray was into Korean, teaching myself the writing system of Hangeul, and picking up some words and phrases (admittedly, I am a bit rusty on all of them).
The idea of having the protagonist of a movie about making first contact by a linguist is amazing, and makes a lot of sense. How do you communicate with an alien lifeform without establishing some kind of commonality? How do you prevent a war over a misunderstanding, if you can't find a way to state your intentions?
This, like Contact, is a thinking man's science fiction story. It makes you reassess what your reaction would be if this scenario ever played out in reality.
I think Amy Adams is amazing, and I think this is a fine vehicle for her. Jeremy Renner has shown himself to be entirely capable to play his role as well. I'm looking forward to this one.
